Who Are Young Carers?
A young carer is someone under 18 who helps to look after a family member who needs extra support because of their health, a disability, or other challenges. This care might include:
-
Practical tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or shopping;
-
Personal care such as helping with washing or dressing;
-
Emotional support or helping to manage someone’s mental health;
-
Sibling support or interpreting for a parent with communication needs.
Young carers often take on responsibilities that can impact their education, wellbeing, and social life.
How We Identify Young Carers
At Meriden Primary, we are committed to identifying and supporting young carers. We do this by:
-
Building trusting relationships with pupils and families;
-
Providing safe spaces for pupils to talk;
-
Training staff to recognise signs that a pupil may be a young carer;
-
Working closely with external agencies and services.
If you believe a child may be a young carer, or if you are a young carer yourself, please get in touch with our Young Carers Champion, Becki Yeomans.
